DAY 1: Weall met early on Tuesday morning at Newcastle train station and travelled down to London on the Virgin East Coast. After a short underground journey to London Bridge, we had a walk along the River Thames to the London Eye, spotting sights on the way. We then had our packed lunch in Jubilee Gardens, before heading to the Youth Hostel to drop off our bags. Once freshened up, we hopped on a London bus to Whitehall. After a stroll past Downing Street and Trafalgar Square, we went for our evening meal at a restaurant in Covent Garden, followed by the performance of Aladdin at the Prince Edward Theatre. The children thoroughly enjoyed the musical with a lot of comedy and spectacle. After a short bus journey, we were back at the Youth Hostel and tucked up in bed getting our sleep and resting our tired legs in preparation for day two.
DAY 2: Day two began with breakfast and a room inspection (all brilliantly tidy). We walked to our first adventure of the day – The Natural History Museum. Here we went to the centre of the earth, experienced an earthquake, learnt about volcanoes, looked at skulls from the past when learning about evolution, heard what a baby hears in their mum’s tummy in the human biology section (which raised a few eyebrows), saw dinosaur fossils and a huge array of stuffed animals – all in 90 minutes! It was time for a quick stroll to Hyde Park to eat our lunch and then a bus to Leicester Square for a spot of souvenir shopping. We then made our final journey via tube to King Cross where we bought some tea and boarded our train. A very long two days but a wonderful experience for everyone and the children made me feel extremely proud! They were wonderful ambassadors for Usworth Colliery and their parents!
Thank you to the Miss Nicholson, Mrs Newall, Mrs Dury and Mrs Brabban for their time and support.
